Expanding On Your Cool Guitar Riff

Once you have come up with a cool guitar riff, it can be hard to let go of it. Not that you should, but you should be able to develop it in some way. You've probably heard this done in many of your favorite tune. A single musical idea that gets expanded on throughout a tune. How is this done?

There are plenty of composers out there who have been able to find a great riff. However, there are far less who know how to take that riff and turn it into something interesting. You can hear example of this in music that simply repeats its self over and over and over...

With the right tools under your belt, this doesn't have to be you.

If this does sound like something you've done that is only because you haven't been properly taught the techniques to develop short ideas. No ones explained how to see a manipulate a riff, so you simply resort to repetition.

Though even if you know about these techniques, they are useless unless you know who to apply it to your own music. You may have heard of how to do this, but have you ever seen it be applied in real time?
